The following is a preview of an interview featured in our third magazine issue focusing on contentment with Morgan Harper Nichols.
We had a chance to catch up with Morgan Harper-Nichols. She’s a singer-songwriter, artist and author. Morgan was born in Los Angeles California, raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and spent a little time in Nashville, Tennessee and Dallas Texas. Currently she resides in Orange County, California with her husband Patrick and her family. The past few years of her life have been spent traveling to share music and speak around the country, oftentimes with her younger sister Jamie-Grace. In 2017, Morgan’s self-titled project was released, featuring songs like ‘Storyteller,’ ‘Grateful,’ and ‘Tough.”
MVW: What is the inspiration behind your self-titled album that features the song “Storyteller?
Morgan: From the time I was a young, I was always passionate about writing. I was a home schooled preacher’s kid and growing up, my family did not have a lot of financial resources. As a result, when a lot of the kids I grew up with had cable TV and video games, we had lots of paper, pencils, and notebooks instead, so I spent all of my spare time writing stories and poems. I never thought I would do music at all, because I was very shy as a kid and the idea of performing in front of others was out of my comfort zone.
“In my teen years, God really used music to encourage me in difficult times and once I realized that I could write songs, it began this journey of what would be years of writing songs.”
I taught myself to play guitar and I began to play them, sing them and perform them. In my early 20’s, God begin to open doors that I never saw coming, and I was able to record my first album. Songs like “Storyteller” and “Morning” came out of that season and music has become a huge part of what God is doing in my life, and for that I am very grateful!
